Garnet group
X3Y2(SiO4)3 (group)
Garnet is a group of cubic silicates whose common members are almandine (red-brown), pyrope (red), spessartine (orange), grossular (green, brown, pink) and andradite (green demantoid, black melanite); dodecahedral and trapezohedral crystals identify the group. Almandine in schist, spessartine from China and grossular from Mexico and Mali are the specimen staples. A garnet label should name the species where possible.
