Jasper is opaque, iron-stained chalcedony or chert with patterns from sediment and mineral inclusions: picture jasper from Oregon, ocean jasper from Madagascar, mookaite from Australia and the red jaspers of everywhere. It is a lapidary rock rather than a species and is sold tumbled, sliced and carved. Genuine material is abundant; the concern is trade names invented for marketing.
