Olivine in Fe–Ni metal

Pallasites are stony-iron meteorites of gem olivine crystals in a nickel-iron matrix, thought to come from the core–mantle boundary of differentiated asteroids; Esquel, Imilac, Fukang, Seymchan and Brahin are the named sources, sold as translucent backlit slices. They are the most beautiful and among the most expensive meteorites per gram. The iron matrix rusts, and olivine falls out of thin slices, so stability treatment is common.

Fakes and treatments

Slices are sometimes stabilised with resin and the olivine backfilled; Brahin and Seymchan slices rust badly in humid storage.
