Scaphites
Scaphite ammonite
Scaphites is the older scaphitid of the Turonian–Campanian Western Interior, with a tightly coiled early whorl and a short hooked body chamber. Specimens come from the Carlile, Niobrara and lower Pierre shales, often as pyritised or nacreous concretion fossils. It is distinguished from Hoploscaphites mainly by age and ornament.
