Mechanical preparation: pin vice and air scribe

Most fossils are prepared by removing matrix a flake at a time. The tools are cheap; the skill is knowing where the fossil ends.

The pin vice — a pen-sized chuck holding a sewing needle or tungsten-carbide point — is the tool every collector should own first. Held like a pencil and pushed or dragged along the matrix boundary, it removes soft shale, clay and marl without vibration. It is silent, reversible in the sense that nothing happens quickly, and it teaches the feel of the boundary between rock and fossil.

An air scribe (pneumatic engraver: the Chicago Pneumatic CP9361, Aro, PaleoTools Micro Jack, ZOIC and the like) hammers a carbide stylus thousands of times a minute. It removes hard limestone and siltstone that a needle cannot, and in skilled hands it is precise to a fraction of a millimetre. Buy the finest stylus you can (the Micro Jack 1 and 2 class for small work), run it at the lowest pressure that cuts, and hold the tip at a low angle so it lifts matrix away from the fossil rather than driving into it.

Work under magnification — a stereo microscope at 7–20× or at minimum a lit head-loupe — with a hard raking light that throws the fossil–matrix boundary into shadow. Stop when you see colour or texture change, and wet the surface to check. Leave a millimetre of matrix and finish with air abrasion or a needle rather than scribing to the surface.

Every vibrating tool cracks specimens. Bed the piece in a sandbag or a bowl of dry sand, support thin plates on a foam-lined board, and consolidate fractures with Paraloid B-72 before they run. If a piece breaks, keep every flake in a labelled container; a preparator can rejoin it, but only with all the parts.

Dust from scribing limestone is calcareous and mostly a nuisance; dust from siltstone, sandstone and chert contains silica and is a lung hazard. Extraction at the bench plus a fitted respirator is the standard; a dust mask is not.
