Screw bryozoan
Archimedes is the Mississippian fenestrate bryozoan whose corkscrew-shaped central axis is a common fossil of the Fort Payne, Warsaw and Chester limestones of the US Midcontinent. The screw axes are abundant and cheap; specimens with the lacy fronds still attached are much rarer. It is named for the Archimedean screw.
